Use of DriveSavers for Data Recovery on Apple Products

Apple Service has allowed DriveSavers, Inc., a data-recovery company, to perform data-recovery services on Apple hard drives beginning June 1, 1999 -- without jeopardizing the validity of a customer's applicable One-Year Limited Warranty, or Apple Care protection Plan.

Please note that Apple will only honor the warranty if the returned drive has a DriveSavers label indicating that DriveSavers recovered the data. Apple will not honor the warranty if the disk enclosure seal on the drive is broken and the drive does not contain the appropriate DriveSavers label.

Other recovery companies may perform similar data-recovery services, but they are not included in this agreement. Use of DriveSavers as a data-recovery company is at the sole discretion of the customer using DriveSavers for this service. DriveSavers toll-free number is 800-440-1904.

Questions and Answers

Q:
Why is Apple honoring the warranty on hard drives that have been through the data-recovery process performed by DriveSavers Inc.?
A: Apple's hard drive manufacturers have agreed to honor Apple's warranty on the recovered drives performed by DriveSavers Inc.

Q: Why is Apple only honoring the warranty on drives if DriveSavers performed data recovery?
A: Apple's hard drive manufacturers have specifically approved DriveSavers Inc. as a data-recovery company.

Q: Will Apple pay for this service?
A: No. Apple only warrants hardware failure, not the recovery of data contained on the drive. Apple explicitly endorses regular hard drive back ups to save data.

Q: What is the difference between "data transfer" and "data recovery"?
A: In the data transfer process data is transferred from one storage unit to another storage unit while a drive is being reformatted. A data transfer can occur when a drive is replaced by a new drive. The data is transferred from one drive to the replacement drive and is usually done with software. The data-recovery process usually takes place under careful conditions in a clean room environment.

Q: Does DriveSavers recover data from drives for products that are sent directly to Apple for repair?
A: No, any recovery must take place before you send your product to Apple.
